Wouldn't it be something if the Festival of Lights just "magically" appears and Santa really DOES do all your holiday shopping? Surprise, neither of them really happens - at least not without YOU. The light display itself and the fund-raising community events and activites are planned, organized and executed by a dedicated and energetic group of volunteers. With our community growing larger, our need for volunteers is constantly growing, too! We ask you to help in every way possible! You can also earn community service hours!
We are searching for interested volunteers to help with our 13th Annual Festival of Lights Kick-Off Party. More details are listed below. If you are interested in volunteering or need community service hours, please complete the form at the bottom of this page.
Prior to the crucial days of November 28 and 29, we need people on the "street" to help pass out flyers to promote the event. If you'll be out of town for Thanksgiving, but still want to contribute (or need hours!) - we can use you! Here's when and what we need:
Friday-Sunday, November 7-9: We need 2-3 teams of people (2-3 each) to drive around Ahwatukee to place flyers and posters in storefronts. We will provide a map and list of locations to canvass. You may do the work at your convenience but it should be done during the day and needs to be completed before the weekend is over.
If you are interested in doing some promotional volunteering, just fill out the form at the bottom of this page and let us know which job you are available for.
We'll meet at Desert Foothills Park Friday, November 28, from 10:30a until 3p. This day is very physical and is usually setting up chairs, tables, putting stakes in the ground, digging in sand, carrying buckets (some heavy, some not so heavy), helping put up signage around the park & in front of each game/booth, getting all rides/booths ready to work the next day, stuffing volunteer goodie bags, etc. If you can't stay all day, no worries, we'll take what we can get...it all helps tremendously! Tennis shoes and comfortable wear is highly recommended. We will provide water, soda and lunch to all volunteers this day only.
As you know, this is our largest event and we NEED hundreds of volunteers to pull it off! Donating even a few valuable hours in your busy holiday schedule helps us and our community shine bright. During the event day, we ask volunteers to work in shifts:
Shift #1 - 10:30 am - 1:30 pm
Shift #2 - 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Shift #3 - 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm
Break Down - 7pm to 10pm
Most volunteers work one or all three shifts if they are able. Keep in mind, the third shift and breaking down is always the most difficult to fill, so if you are able, please sign up for the end of the days' shifts! These volunteer opportunities are endless & FUN; selling tickets, working game booths, manning an inflatable activity, working in concession booths, helping to set-up, clean-up, break-down and much more! Every year each volunteer will receive a special "thank you" goody bag provided by Festival of Lights and local sponsors to show our extreme appreciation.
We need a handful of volunteers for the evenings of December 13th & 20th from 5:00p-9:00p. The horse-drawn hayrides depart Altadena MS and head north on Desert Foothills to the Telegraph Pass turnaround point. These two nights we need help with line/crowd control, taking tickets, making sure the families are on the carts safe and sound, etc. It's a quick and fun night but make sure to dress warm as those couple of hours are outside!
Those million white lights must come down somehow, and WE DO IT! The date this year is Saturday, January 10th - and again on January 17th if we don't finish the first day (which we've managed to do the last 3 years thanks to the wonderful volunteers!) We always feed our volunteers lunch, provide soda and water throughout the day and LOTS of wipes & Band-Aids! We meet at 9a and usually call it a day around 4p. Again, you don't have to stay all day, any amount of time you can donate is definitely needed! High-schoolers are allowed on the medians, Middle-schoolers must be with a parent(s) or a guardian at all times. For safety reasons, no grade-schoolers, please.
